We’re Ron, Dawne, Dylan and Reese — otherwise known as R2D2, The Traveling Brood (yes, we are slightly geeky!).
We started traveling together back in college, when we were just Ron and Dawne, two frugal students who saved up our part-time job money to travel to Europe in hostels and inns. When we got married and found stable jobs, we continued to embark on trips with slightly more cash, but with the same kind of mindset — whether it’s budget, standard or luxury travel, what mattered was the experiences we cherished, the cultures we learned about, and the people we met along the way.
When Dylan and Reese entered into our world, we thought we’d slow down a bit and stay put in one place. That, of course, never happened — this “travel bug” thing, it’s not temporary… it stays with you forever. We’ve embraced it since– from several meltdowns on the plane or the countless “Are we there yet?” queries, to the wondrous gasps upon seeing a rare species or endemic flora & fauna.
For us, it’s never been about staying at the best luxury hotels or eating at the fanciest restaurants, although we do splurge every now and then. We’re inspired by the destinations that we travel to, but we visit knowing that it’s not about hitting every museum, attraction or top 10 highlight, but it’s about enjoying life as temporary citizens, meeting locals even with our painful accents, eating regional delicacies, visiting neighborhood parks and local beaches, and just savoring the seemingly mundane daily things as a family.
Every day is a journey for us as we discover new things with our children whether it’s on an adventurous hike through Machu Picchu or a simple trip to the grocery store. And now, we’re taking it one step further as we make traveling a permanent gig and uproot ourselves from sunny California to island nirvana Puerto Rico!
